Meted by Your Measure
Lk 6:38
2-15-09
In the Bible we find similar verses in three different contexts all illustrating a great Bible principle. The texts are:
(Mat 7:2 KJV) For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
(Mark 4:24 KJV) And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.
(Luke 6:38 KJV) Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
Here is the Biblical principle in life – the measure you use to mete a thing is the measure that will be used to mete it out to you.
In the case of the mote and beam – when you are critical of the mote in someone else’s eye it is measured as a beam in your own eye – it is measured back to you in a quantity larger than what you used to measure it – in other words when you make a very big thing out of a very small thing in someone else’s life, God makes a big thing out of very small things in your life, as well – it’s sometimes called making a mountain out of a mole hill
In the case of hearing the words of God – if you regard the word of God as nothing more than man’s word then you essentially limit the words to the words of men – in truth, the words of God are God’s words, regardless of whether they are in a King James Bible or an original autograph [no longer extant] – so many people today reject the words of God in a King James Bible, choosing to believe rather that the Bible is nothing more than a mere translation subject to the errors of men and subject to the criticism of men – if you choose to believe that God’s words are no longer extant and that any Bible today is just a book written by men then you will never be given the truth of God’s words by the Holy Spirit [2 Tim 3:16-17] and you will also lose that which you had received from the Holy Spirit before – conversely, if you regard the words as God’s words then not only are you given what the Holy Spirit wants you to receive when you read and study but you are given an infinite supply from the words of God, as well [Matt 4:4]
Consider the Jews who judge that the New Testament is not the word of God – they reject it – in doing so, though, all of the revelation in the Old Testament that points to their Messiah is also taken away from them so that they cannot see its fulfillment in Jesus Christ - thus they have less than the Old Testament, they just have a set of rules and feasts – when presented with the gospel if they believe the words of God concerning Jesus, then the whole Bible opens up to them just like it did for the disciples after the resurrection of Jesus Christ – Jesus had to upbraid them for their unbelief in order to get them to “see” it [Lk 24]
In the case of giving – if you measure out just a little of your abundance then when you have a need it will be measured to you the way you meted it out – very little – but if you mete it out in abundance, then it will be measured to you in abundance – even running over the measure you used
Here are some examples of this principle as it concerns giving:
Ruth gave her mother in law all of the barley she collected over an above the little bit Ruth needed for her daily sustenance – when she went to see Boaz, Boaz gave her 6 measures - when he married her and she suddenly had the fields, too
Rahab gave the spies protection, her life went for their lives – but when she was protected by their oath, she was able to spare not only her life but also the lives of her father, mother, brothers and sisters
The widow gave Elijah the last of her meal and oil [1 Ki 17] and so she received a daily provision of meal and oil for herself and her son and Elijah as long as the famine lasted
In each of these cases, the measure ran way over that which was given – likewise, in this day and time, when people are concerned about the economy do three things – have mercy on your brothers rather than being judgmental – believe the words of God in the KJV and read and study them for your daily provision – give rather than hoard
