THE WISE MEN’S GIFTS
Matt. 2:11
The gifts that the wise men gave represent some things about the Lord Jesus Christ. They symbolize him as a King, as God, as the Temple, as a Priest, as an Intercessor, as the Messiah, as a Bridegroom and as a Man prepared for his burial.
THE GIFT OF GOLD
The gift of gold signified that Jesus is a King as in Matt 2:2; 1 Ki 9:14; 1 Ki 9:28; 1 Ki 10:2; 1 Ki 10:9-25 since gold is for kings.
The gift of gold signified that Jesus is God as in Deut 7:25; Is 40:18-19; Is 46:6; Rev 21:21-22 since gold represents deity.
The gift of gold signified that Jesus would now be the Temple since the Temple would be destroyed in 70 AD 2 Chr 3:4; 2 Chr 4:19-5:1; Matt 23:16; Ex 25:10-31; Ex 37:25-26; Ex 39:38; Jn 2:19 since gold was used in the Temple in the holiest of holies.
THE GIFT OF FRANKINCENSE
The gift of incense signified that Jesus is a Priest as in Heb 3:1; Num 4:16; Ex 30:8-9; Lev 16:12-13 since the priest offered incense with the sacrifices and when he approached the mercy seat.
The gift of incense signified that Jesus is an Intercessor as in Lk 1:9-10; Rev. 8:3; Heb 7:25-26 since incense is connected with the prayers of the saints offered to God.
THE GIFT OF MYRRH
The gift of Myrrh signified that Jesus is the Anointed One (Christ, Messiah) as in Ex 30:23-29; Is 61:1-2; Lk 4:18-19 since Myrrh is an anointing oil.
The gift of Myrrh signified that Jesus is the Bridegroom preparing for his wedding as in SOS 1:13; Est. 2:12; Jn 3:29; Rev 19:7-9 since Myrrh is a sweet perfume used by brides and grooms.
The gift of Myrrh signified that Jesus is the Man who would die for our sins as in Mk 15:23; Jn 19:39 since Myrrh was used in burial rites.
