Brother Jeff McArdle, missionary to Cuba, was with us this past week and preached on the call to the ministry.  Here are notes from his sermon.

A Call to the Ministry takes five things (Acts 13:1-3; 1 Tim 1:12):

  1. Faithfulness – you have to be faithful where you are or you are not going to get the next four things

  1. A Burden – Hab 1:1-5 is the closest thing that people will sense as a burden today.  However, this is not a call.

  1. The Call – comes directly from God, never from a man. The Holy Spirit said, “I have called them.”

  1. The Enabling – Paul was enabled by God to go into the ministry.

  1. The Putting In – No man can stop this and no man can destroy it except for the man himself.  God can put him out of the ministry.

Bro. McArdle knew that he was called by the following for testimonies:

  1. The testimony of the scriptures (Is 20:5; Job 22:30)

  1. The testimony of the Holy Spirit (Rom 8:14)

  1. The testimony of the brethren – others bore witness to the call of God on his life

  1. The testimony of circumstances – things fell into place that could have only been directed by God

He also gave 7 tips on being a missionary:

  1. You can’t be lazy – you have to work

  2. Quit worrying about the money – God has the obligation of taking care of you

  3. Forget about yourself – Jesus is the center of the universe – you don’t really matter

  4. Never fear to say what God told you to say

  5. Never say what God didn’t tell you to say

  6. Preach the word

  7. Never turn down an opportunity to preach
