Putting on the New Man
Eph 4:21-32
9-09-07
We saw last week what it is to walk as a lost Gentile. When we get saved, however, we do not automatically change into the new creature that we have become. There are all kinds of things that have to be put off and there are new things that have to be put on in order for our lives to manifest that we are new creatures in Christ. That’s why some people who get saved change and grow steadily as they mature, while others don’t even appear to be saved.
You know you are beginning to grow up into the new man in the Lord, when you see the following dozen or so changes in your life:
Your conversations will change 22 – compare Eph 2:3 with Phil 3:20 and Phil 1:27 – you’ll quit telling dirty jokes and you’ll start witnessing, for instance
You won’t give in to those old deceitful lusts 22 – compare Rom 6:12 and 13a with Rom 6:13b – this concerns the lust of the flesh as well as the lust of the eyes
You’ll start thinking about spiritual things 23 – Col 3:1-2; 1 Cor 2:12-13 – before all you could think about were carnal things – you must be transformed by the renewing of your mind Rom 12:2
You’ll desire to live a righteous and holy life 24 – Tit 2:11-14; 1 Jn 3:2-3
You’ll quit lying and start telling the truth 25 – compare Tit 1:12-12 with Eph 4:15
Your anger won’t get the best of you 26 – there are times when you need to be angry [Matt 5:22, when there is a cause] – but the rest of the time you need to keep a lid on it Prov 14:29
You’ll quit giving in to the devil 27 – you’ll start to resist him1 Pet 5:8-9; Jas 4:7
You’ll quit stealing, you’ll start working and you’ll give 28 – 2 Thes 3:10-15 – just look what the Macedonians did in 2 Cor 8:1-5
You’ll be careful to say things that edify the saints 29 – 2 Cor 12:19-20 we should edify one another rather than strive and debate and backbite
You’ll not grieve the Spirit of God 30 – rather you’ll be filled with him Eph 5:18 – failure to put off the old man and to put on the new man causes you to grieve the Spirit of God
You’ll get rid of bitterness, wrath, evil speaking and the like 31 – people come naturally equipped with a hellish tongue Jas 3:5-8 – but when your heart is changed by the Lord, things in your heart change and, therefore, so do things that come out of your mouth Matt 12:34
You’ll be kind, tenderhearted and forgiving 32 – these are spiritual qualities that develop when you realize how kind and forgiving the Lord has been toward you – Lk 6:35-36
