Obedient Children
Eph 6:1-3
11-04-07

Children you are to obey your parents in the Lord – you ought to obey them anyway – but particularly you ought to obey those who are in Jesus

Why should you obey them?  Because:

  1. It’s right – not right in your own eyes but right in the eyes of the Lord [in Judges everyone did that which was right in his own eyes and they destroyed their country] [under some of the kings, “he did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord” and restored the country] – one of the biggest problems facing this country is disobedient children doing that which is right in their own eyes - people should always want to know first and foremost what the right thing is to do – and then they ought to do it – parents we might add that if you’re not doing right don’t expect your children to do right – they may but don’t expect them to

We studied ‘servants’ today in Sunday school – saw something interesting – 100 years ago, the children used to be servants of the household – they had chores and they had to fit everything else they did [like school] around the chores – today the parents are servants of the kids – cooking for them, chauffeuring for them – being spectators for them – shopping for them – cleaning for them – it’s ridiculous – the kids grow up expecting that their parents are to be doing everything for them – no wonder they are so disobedient and spoiled

  1. It’s honorable – kids have a terrible time with respect and honor – when you obey, you are showing great respect and honor for your elders – particularly those who brought you in to the world and have high hopes for your future – at McCallie school our motto was Honor Truth and Duty – my father called my mother’s parents Mr. and Mrs. – you should say yes sir and yes ma’am – you should rise for those older than you – you should respect them -

  1. It’s Biblical – you know precisely that this is God’s will and desire for you – the best way to train them is to first submit to the Bible yourself and then teach them to submit to it as well – then everyone has a common authority – children should see what the bible says and then do it

  1. It’s wise -

    1. Well with thee – things go really well for you when you are obedient – parents don’t fuss and ground and punish when you do well - late night accidents are avoided – they help you make rational decisions and you should obey them

    1. Live long on the earth – long life is not your major concern today but it will be when you are 50 – preparations for that start to day

Conclusion:

Start obeying them today and don’t quit – much of what I do today that’s good was instilled in me from the earliest ages of my childhood by my father and mother

We might add that we are created by God and in essence we are his offspring – he said you must be born again – you ought not to be in the habit of disobeying your creator – as his offspring you owe him the honor of doing what he said – it’s right – it’s honorable – it’s biblical – it’s wise – it’ll go well with thee and you will live forever!!
